Use your own real PSP games and turn them into ISO or CSO files, or simply play free homebrew games, which are available online. Put those in /PSP/GAME on your SD card / USB storage.

Some technical stuff: PPSSPP can run your PSP games on your PC in full HD resolution, and play them on Android too. It can even upscale textures that would otherwise be too blurry as they were made for the small screen of the original PSP. Even on modern Android phones and tablets, you can often run at double the original resolution.

Some technical notes:

  • PPSSPP is in its early stages and game compatibility is thus still somewhat spotty. We’ll be adding more and more over time, however!
  • An important feature of PPSSPP for Android is that it can now run PSP homebrew too: apps and games! That’s a first for any emulator out there, and we’re proud of the work we’ve done here.

It can even upscale textures that would otherwise be too blurry as they were made for the small screen of the original PSP.

Upscaling can be used to make textures less blurry. This is achieved by interpolation, a computerized method of estimating missing data based on surrounding information. As the name indicates, it’s an indirect way of improving quality by making guesses about missing or low-resolution data from nearby source pixels. It’s not as good as using high-resolution textures in the first place, but it will improve image quality more than just turning up the sharpness filter in your emulator settings.

In order to upscale textures in PPSSPP, simply boot up your game and go to Graphics > Advanced > Texture Scaling, and choose “3x” from the dropdown menu next to “Upscale Level.” Then click Apply Changes and wait for PPSSPP to recompile all the textures for your current game session. After that, you should see noticeably less blurry images throughout the titles you emulate on PC with PPSSPP!

Even on modern Android phones and tablets, you can often run at double the original resolution.

To get the most out of PPSSPP, you want to actually run it on a device that is powerful enough. The PS2 emulator, PCSX2, for example, will require a quad-core processor with multi-threading capabilities. That means you’re not going to be able to play it on anything less than an Intel Core i5 or AMD FX-6300 series CPU.

In regards to the resolution of the games, however, PPSSPP is much more forgiving. Even on modern Android phones and tablets, you can often run at double the original resolution. There are even options available if you have an Android TV box that outputs a 4K video! It’s worth trying every setting possible until you find something that works best given your hardware.

It’s a PSP emulator, which is an excellent tool for playing games. If you’ve ever wanted to play the latest games on your Android device and can’t do so because they’re not available in ISO or CSO format, then this could be the answer you’re looking for. Part of the allure of this application lies in how it runs at full speed while still running the games at high enough resolutions to make them playable. Some users have noted that their experience differs from others—some real games run at over 60 frames per second while some homebrews run at under thirty-five—but if you stay on top of updates and patches and apply those as soon as they’re released, you’ll get yourself a top-notch emulator with a wealth of great nostalgic fun.

How to Use PPSSPP PSP Emulator for Android

1. You are free to choose your own emulator.

This tutorial is for the PPSSPP emulator. You are free to choose any PSP emulator you wish (although we recommend PPSSPP). However, keep in mind that the compatibility of a particular game with an emulator depends on the emulator. Some emulators have more features, some boast better graphics, some are more stable, and many other things. We recommend you try out at least several emulators to find one you like the most.

2. You can start the game and use “save state” to save your progress.

You can also save your progress and load it later. This is done with “save state” and “load state”. To save, simply press the “save state” button at any time in the emulator and then choose a number to associate with your saved game. You can have up to 10 saved games for each game you play this way. When you exit the game, it will be saved automatically so you don’t need to worry about saving it again by pressing the “save state” button. Later, when you’re ready to resume playing that game where you left off, just hit the “load state” button followed by choosing which of your previously used save slots you’d like to use.

3. You can restore the saved state by running with “save state” or “load state”.

  • You can restore the saved state by running with “save state” or “load state”.
  • Press F8 while playing to save the current display screen.
  • Press F9 while playing to load one of these games.
  • You can also use the right-click menu in PPSSPP and select a game number.

4. For playing PS1 games, you’ll need real remote control.

  • For playing games from Sony’s first PlayStation, you’ll require a real remote control. The PPSSPP emulator does not yet support virtual buttons for the PS1 game menu.
  • You can download a free remote control app and use it with your Android device or you can connect a Bluetooth or wired USB remote control to your Android device.

5. Unless you have a hardware decoder, you won’t be able to play PS1 games on your PC.

If you don’t have a hardware decoder, you’ll need to use a software decoder. This can be done by downloading the game from the internet and playing it with an emulator. There is no guarantee that it will work properly and you may experience slowdowns or lag, so this is not recommended. The good news is that there are alternatives to using the software decoder, one of which is known as Remote Play. This requires purchasing a real remote control, which can then be used to play PS1 games on your PC or Android device. If you’re looking for another way to play PS1 games on your PC, using an emulator may be the best solution for you.
